Is Instant Family ok for a 10 year old? ›

We recommend parental guidance for children under 13 years because of the movie's mild violence, coarse language, and occasional sexual and substance abuse references.

The MPAA rating has been assigned for “thematic elements, sexual material, language and some drug references.” The Kids-In-Mind.com evaluation includes some evident cleavage, sexual innuendo, many scenes of arguing and misunderstandings, a few scenes with some blood after punches or encounters with balls, and 1 F-word.

Watchable. Instant Family is almost a good film, with terrific lead performances by Wahlberg and Byrne. A bit too soppy, cutesy and silly in my opinion, with stereotypes and pandering. The two leads make it watchable and likable, but when they're not at the fore, it really struggles to stay above water.

The film was inspired by Anders' own experiences fostering and then adopting three siblings. The children were aged 6 years, 3 years, and 18 months. Anders talked to other adoptive families and teenagers who had grown up in care and then been adopted in order to research the character of Lizzie.

Great movie for older teens+

As an adult I really enjoyed this movie and have watched it multiple times. But the first review I read on here is the perfect example of why this isn't for younger teens or below.

But because of its violence, coarse language and some sexual references, it isn't suitable for children under 7 years and we recommend parental guidance for children aged up to 10 years. These are the main messages from this movie: It's important to be adaptable and resourceful when times demand it.

In 2018, the fostering world was offered a comedic take on the journey to becoming new foster parents. Both aptly and ironically named Instant Family, filmmaker Sean Anders based the film on his own experiences fostering and adopting his three children.

Instant Family also delves into a sad reality that many foster parents experience: the resurfacing of a birth parent out of the blue that can stop a family from adopting a foster child.

In INSTANT FAMILY, a 40-something couple named Pete and Ellie (Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne) decide to foster three siblings, including a smart and rebellious teenager named Lizzy (Isabela Moner).
