An Irish man has drowned off the coast of Spain after getting into difficulty while swimming on Monday evening. The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that they are aware of the incident and say they are providing consular assistance. Local media has reported that the man was in his 70s but he has not been named. English language news site, The Leader, said the incident happened at around 5pm on Monday June 3. They said emergency services were alerted after a swimmer had been pulled out of the water unconscious at Cala Capitán – about 80km south of Alicante. According to the site: ‘A SAMU (Medical Emergency Regulation Centres) unit performed advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation, among other advanced life support techniques. ‘However, there was no response, and they could only confirm his death. ‘An autopsy will reveal the causes of the man’s drowning.’ Local media report, the Irishman’s death is the fourth in the last three days as another man was airlifted to hospital after he was pulled from the sea in nearby Benidorm. Last week another Irish tourist died in a suspected drowning on Spain’s Costa Dorada. The 72-year-old was taken unconscious from the water shortly after midday on May 29 and attempts made to save his life at the scene by emergency responders. But police and paramedics were unable to revive him and he was pronounced dead just before 1pm.
