Our Verdict

The Nextbase 622GW offers an extra large and accurate touch screen for navigation and easy visibility, but its size is not the only attribute contributing to its user-friendliness. The menu is intuitive and offers features like Alexa support, parking mode, and SOS services, making for a streamlined and supported experience. This large dash cam has decent video quality and great reliability and can even attach a rear-facing camera, sold separately, for a larger field of view. If you are looking for a larger-bodied dash cam that is easy to use and money is no object, the 622GW may be the right choice for you.

Bottom LineA camera that is as easy to see as it is to use, but a little on the expensive sideA great camera for rideshare drivers that need in-cabin footage, but probably overkill for most other peopleRegardless of the time, this dash cam captures clear and crisp videosA dual-camera for your dash so you can see what's happening both inside and outsideA small budget-friendly dash cam with the performance to match

Our Analysis and Test Results

This dash cam is one of the largest in our test suite and, as a result, offers a very big, clear, easy-to-see LCD touch screen. Its 4K camera also plays a role in visibility. Read on to see how the Nextbase 622GW holds up in our rigorous testing process.

Performance Comparison

Video Quality

The Nextbase 622GW comes in hot with 4K resolution and a decent 140-degree field of view. These specs offer great daytime license plate identification but the lens flare at night makes things a little more difficult. License plates at night have an intense blur to them, making the image somewhat unreliable. Day or night, the image resolution is clear, but the edges feel too sharp, giving most imagery a somewhat over-processed grain.

Video Capture

Features like auto-on and event detection offer more reliable video capture. The 622GW has both of these features, ensuring that your device turns on with your car and saves video clips when the G-sensor is triggered. Unfortunately, a hard break with the default settings does not trigger the G-sensor Event Detection; however, a quick adjustment to the settings can help fix this issue. The battery is powerful and lasts a long time, so you do not need to have it plugged in 24-7. Clip lengths are offered in one, two, and three minutes.

There is no interior camera, but it has built-in WiFi. This makes updating the software and sharing images or videos easy and even allows for GPS tracking. Other safety features like emergency SOS response contribute to the overall reliability of this device by contacting emergency services if no movement is detected after a collision. Overall the Nextbase 622GW offers very reliable video capturing.

Interface

Aside from the video capture reliability, the 622GW interface is its claim to fame. The LCD screen is one of the largest in our test suite at three inches, making it easy to see, even at a quick glance. The user-friendly touch screen is accurate and receptive, even to light touch, and the menu options are intuitive. Overall, the 622GW offers a very easeful user experience.

Visual Footprint

With a three-inch LCD screen, it's no surprise that the 622GW footprint is also rather large. This device really puts the camera in dash cam as it is the size of a small digital camera at 3 3/4 by 2 1/8 by 2 inches. The adhesive mount is a little smaller than the camera and is very reliable. Generally speaking, we have had better experiences with suction mounts, but the 622GW has a magnet that sticks to the device for easy removal, unlike most other adhesive mounts that make removing the dash cam very difficult.

Should You Buy the Nextbase 622GW?

The Nextbase 622GW offers great video quality during the day and a hefty number of useful features made possible by the presence of WiFi. The video capture is reliable as long as your settings are correct and the interface is super easy to navigate. The main issue with this device is its steep price point. Other options in our test suite perform only slightly lower than the 622GW for a mere fraction of the price. If money is absolutely no object, then this is a great option, but it's not worth the extra money.

What Other Dash Cams Should You Consider?

If you're looking for a well-rounded high performer like the Nextbase 622, but don't want to spend all that extra money for no reason, take a look at the Vantrue N2 Pro Uber Dual. The N2 offers high video quality and reliability as well as a relatively easy to navigate interface and a large LCD screen. The only place the N2 suffers is its footprint. This dash cam is quite large, which may not bother most people, but is worth noting.
