These times are meant to be used as a guide but may vary depending on the severity of a patient’s injury/illness.

Accommodations

While we understand that nutrition is an important part of your daily life, some medical testing and procedures require a patient to abstain from eating and drinking until the care team has a better understanding of a patient’s diagnosis. Our team is dedicated to assisting you obtain a meal when permitted. Your health care team will gladly provide you with a meal when you are medically cleared. Please inquire with your care providers if you have any questions.

Where can I purchase food for myself or my family member?

Our Cafeteria can be found on the basem*nt level of our hospital.

Hours of Operation: 7:30am-6:30pm. Grab and go options are available during off hours via vending machine—located in the cafeteria.

Restrooms

Our department was designed with our patients in mind, for easy accessibility, the Emergency Department has several restrooms available for patients and visitors, located in the waiting room, and throughout the unit. Please ask any one of our dedicated team members to assist you to the nearest available restroom.

How can I find the main hospital?

During your stay or visit, you may need to locate the Main hospital. We look forward to helping you locate your destination.

Parking

To alleviate the added stress of having to park your vehicle, we have introduced a complimentary Valet at our Prince’s Bay Emergency Department. This is available 9am-5pm Monday through Friday. Additional street parking can be found on Melville Street, Seguine Avenue and Case Avenue.

Press Ganey

Our team at Northwell Health is always eager to listen and learn from our patients. After your stay or visit, you may receive a survey requesting your feedback. Please take the time to respond and share your comments. We want to know how we are doing so that we may recognize our team members, better understand what a ‘great experience’ means to you and continue to improve our services.

You can expect to receive a Press Ganey survey approximately 2 weeks after you visit. You can receive a survey three ways: text message, e-mail, or by mail.

Patient entertainment tablets

Please ask any of our team members to provide you with one of our patient entertainment tablets. These tablets can be utilized to assist with communication, offer our patients entertainment during their stay, provide our patients with education about their diagnosis, and aid in language interpretation.

Here at Staten Island University Hospital

Every patient is unique and important to us! You will be seen first by a nurse who will determine where your care by our team will take place. You may be treated in a stretcher, recliner, or chair.
Your privacy is of utmost importance to us, we strive to deliver quality care to every patient. The department has many different treatment areas, and each patient will be treated in the most appropriate setting possible.

Each hallway location has a dedicated privacy screen for patient use. We also have multiple exam rooms that are utilized by providers and nurses to ensure that we do our best to keep every patient’s information confidential.

Do not hesitate to ask a team member if you are in need of assistance, experience a change in your condition, or have any questions.

If you are admitted to the hospital

If the clinical team decides you need to be admitted to the hospital, you will be assigned a hospital bed as soon as one is available.

Moving from the Emergency Department to your room

Waiting times for an inpatient hospital bed can be unpredictable. While you wait, we will make sure you are as comfortable as possible, and of course, continue to provide you with the best medical care.

If your medical condition permits you to eat, we will provide meals right here in the Emergency Department.

Management of your care

Upon admission your care will be transferred from the Emergency Department clinicians to the admitting doctors and advanced practice providers. They will coordinate your care while you are still in the Emergency Department or once you are moved into an inpatient room. If you need to speak with them, please ask your nurse to contact them for you.

Your room is a place for healing

You may expect your room to be quiet, clean, and comfortable—you can be very confident that your care will meet the highest standards associated with Northwell Health. Rooms may be shared with up to two roommates.
